The National Transportation Safety Board has invited James River Transportation’s President, Stephen Story, to speak at a forum addressing the importance of safety culture in transportation on September 10 and 11, 2013, in Washington, D.C.

“In our accident investigations we have seen instances of weak or non-existent safety cultures,” said NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman. “In this forum, we want to highlight what’s present in strong safety cultures as well as identify what works to build these cultures in order to more effectively prevent accidents.”

The forum will review the progress and innovations that have been made in developing safety cultures throughout the transportation community and pinpoint areas where there are opportunities for improvements. Participants — including operators, labor groups and oversight authorities — will outline their roles, responsibilities and methods for developing effective safety cultures, with emphasis on the remaining challenges and steps needed for further improvements.

James River Transportation recently added to its fleet of vehicles and enhanced its GPS tracking technology.  The following vehicles were purchased to update the fleet as well as increase the choices available to customers:

• 6 Ford Flex sedans and 2 Ford vans were added to the Norfolk Airport operation to replace vehicles being retired.  The sedans have extended legroom for added passenger comfort and the vans have center aisles to facilitate loading and unloading of passengers.
• A 55-passenger, wheelchair-equipped MCI model was added to the motorcoach fleet to address increasing customer needs for such vehicles.
• A new 32-passenger Ford minicoach was added to provide additional fleet capacity and increase the options available to customers.

In addition, the company installed DriveCam’s GPS tracking system in all of its vehicles.  The system features include:
