Environmentally Friendly Transportation

James River Transportation is proud of our designation as Virginia Green partners.

Virginia Green is the statewide program that works to reduce the environmental impact of Virginia’s tourism industry. It is a partnership between the Virginia Tourism Corporation and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. The program awards Virginia Green Certification to tourism-related businesses taking voluntary actions to reduce harmful impacts on the environment.

Today it is very popular to talk about being “green”, but, many years before this, our organization was focused on the basics of being a good citizen. We conserve, we recycle and we dispose of our trash properly. Not very fancy and certainly not done to make us look good; it is just the right thing to do.

In 1998, our headquarters was built to conserve energy.

• Energy efficient lighting
• Geothermal heating and air conditioning, an extremely efficient system which uses the Earth's thermal energy to achieve up to a 40% savings in energy
• Radiant garage heat
• Automated thermostats
• Natural lighting with sky lights
• Reduced water usage
• Insulated windows, block walls, doors and skylights

In our maintenance department, we

• Recycle used fluids – oil, antifreeze, refrigerant
• Our oil filters are drained and recycled, not thrown in the trash.
• Our wash water is filtered and tested before entering the sewer.

We also recycle our consumables; paper, plastics, cans and glass.

For those who like to measure energy usage and savings, think about these numbers:

Although our larger vehicles use more total energy, they are tremendously efficient. Each of our high capacity vehicles take cars off the road (40 cars for each motorcoach, 20 cars for each mini-coach and 10 cars for each van).

If you add the total amount of energy we consume at all three locations (fuel, lights, heat, air conditioning and garage equipment) and factor in the savings by utilizing efficient vehicles…

We save 10,164.2 tons of CO2 a year.

We are not just “Carbon Neutral”, we are “carbon positive” !!!

Calculations are based on 2007 electricity and gas usage and a study by MJ Bradley and Associates for the American Bus Association.
